DAGESTAN PAPAKHA (Limited Edition 1 of 1)
I found this papakha in a small wooden shop high above the mountains of Khunzakh, Dagestan. It had rained the day before, so the air felt clean and still. Inside the shop, shelves were lined with wool hats, shepherd coats, and handmade crafts. The walls were rough wood, and everything smelled faintly of wool and earth.
As soon as I tried this one on, I knew it was special. It had a distinct lamb smell - fresh, like it had just been made - and you could tell it was crafted by hand, not for tourists, but for the people who actually live and work up there. It felt authentic, honest, and full of character.
I wore this papakha while filming the Dagestan Diaries, and it became more than a hat. It became part of the experience, a piece of the Avar mountain culture.
From the mountains of Khunzakh, Dagestan — where shepherds and horsemen have worn these wool hats for generations. Each papakha is handmade from natural lamb wool, sheared and crafted locally using traditional methods that haven’t changed in centuries.
The wool is washed, shaped, and brushed by hand to give it that signature texture — soft yet wild, almost cloudlike. It’s warm, breathable, and built to last in the harsh mountain climate. This particular style is the same type worn by Avar men during ceremonies, village gatherings, and throughout daily life in the highlands.
Made with pure Dagestan lamb wool. Khabib approved.
