WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
Hands-on training in studio and on the streets of New York City
CINEMATIC LIGHTING, DONE RIGHT
Most workshops teach you to react to light. I teach you how to shape it. We work with natural and artificial light in real environments until your images feel cinematic and intentional, not lucky.
COMPOSITION EXPLAINED
Composition isn’t guesswork, and I’ll prove it. I break down exactly why strong images work so you can build better photos on purpose and repeat those results anywhere in the world.
REAL PEOPLE, REAL ACCESS
You’ll photograph real people, not staged scenes. My local relationships and years of on-the-ground trust mean doors open naturally, giving you access most photographers never experience.
SMALL GROUPS, REAL EXPERIENCE
I cap every expedition and workshop at seven people. You’ll get hands-on coaching from me in the field, walk away with portfolio-ready images, and the kind of experience that reminds you why you picked up a camera in the first place.

MEET BRETT
I’m Brett Garamella, a photographer and documentary filmmaker who leads small-group photography expeditions into some of the most compelling places on earth. We're talking misty Colombian coffee mountains, the chaotic beauty of India’s streets, the gritty energy of New York City, and destinations worldwide that most travelers never find their way into. My work has taken me from working with brands such as National Geographic and ESPN to an Academy Award qualifying short film, and everywhere in between.
I’ve spent years chasing real stories in remote places. Photographing Cuba's tobacco farmers. Living among MMA fighters in Dagestan. Spending a full year in Colombia documenting coffee growers and everyday life. Building portrait series across India. These aren't trips I planned from a desk. They're experiences I lived, and they shaped everything about how I shoot and how I teach.
A few times a year, I bring a small group of photographers along for the ride.
I came up through New York City’s professional film production world, where I learned something most photographers never get taught: you don’t just use light, you shape it. On these expeditions you’ll learn to do exactly that, connecting with real people, working in real environments, and creating images that feel cinematic and alive, not accidental.
Every expedition is capped at seven people. That means real time in the field together, great conversations, spontaneous moments, good food, and the kind of experience that stays with you long after you're home. I’m fluent in Spanish and have lived in Colombia, which means when we’re in Colombia, doors open that most visitors never even know exist.
What I’m offering doesn’t exist anywhere else. Not the access, not the instruction, not the combination of real documentary craft and on-the-ground relationships built over years. You’ll come home with extraordinary images, real skills, and stories worth telling.
This is your invitation to get off the tourist path and into something real.
New York City. Colombia. India. Worldwide. Small groups. Real access. Unforgettable adventures.
